The Manufacturing Principle of Sophons
Sophons are among the Trisolaran civilization's most exquisite technological masterpieces, their manufacturing process involving deep manipulation of the universe's fundamental structure. According to string theory and extra-dimension theory, the three-dimensional space we perceive is actually the manifestation of higher-dimensional spaces curled up at macroscopic scales. Microscopic particles — such as protons — contain higher-dimensional spatial structures at their extremely tiny scales. The Trisolaran civilization mastered the technology to unfold the curled-up higher-dimensional space inside protons to macroscopic scales.
When a proton is unfolded from higher dimensions to two dimensions, it can spread into a plane of enormous area — in the novel, a single proton unfolded into a two-dimensional plane that could wrap around an entire planet. The Trisolaran civilization etched integrated circuits onto this vast two-dimensional surface, transforming it into a fully functional supercomputer. After etching was complete, the two-dimensional plane was folded back to the proton's microscopic scale. Thus, a microscopic particle that appeared identical to an ordinary proton actually contained a computer of tremendous computational power and intelligence running within it.
The Trisolaran civilization experienced multiple failures during the sophon manufacturing process. Early unfolding experiments led to catastrophic consequences — protons went out of control during unfolding, with their enormous two-dimensional planes blocking the Trisolaran system's stars, causing severe environmental disasters. After numerous attempts and refinements, the Trisolaran civilization finally succeeded in manufacturing two fully functional sophons, which were then launched toward Earth at the speed of light.
Arrival and Deployment
Traveling at the speed of light, sophons needed only approximately four years to reach Earth from the Alpha Centauri system. In contrast, the Trisolaran physical fleet, traveling at one-tenth light speed, required approximately four hundred years to arrive. This meant sophons reached Earth nearly four hundred years ahead of the fleet, conducting prolonged and meticulous advance preparations for the fleet's eventual arrival.
Upon reaching Earth, the two sophons immediately began executing their missions. At the microscopic level, they were invisible — as particles the size of protons, humanity possessed no means of detecting, capturing, or destroying them. Sophons could move freely through any space, penetrate any material barrier, and travel between any two points on Earth at near-light speed. More importantly, the two sophons maintained instantaneous superluminal communication through quantum entanglement, with one sophon remaining on Earth while the other could return to the Trisolaran fleet, enabling real-time information transfer between Earth and the Trisolaran civilization.
The sophon deployment strategy operated on multiple levels. On the scientific blockade level, the sophons' primary mission was to interfere with experiments at all particle accelerators worldwide. They would intervene at the critical instant of high-energy particle collisions, participating in collision reactions with their own proton shells, thereby altering experimental results. Since sophons were indistinguishable from experimental particles at the quantum level, this interference was in principle undetectable. Scientists would only see chaos and contradictions in experimental data — identical experiments repeated yielding different results, with known physical laws appearing to no longer hold.
Comprehensive Surveillance
The sophons' surveillance capabilities were equally chilling. In their microscopic state, they could enter any location on Earth — government top-secret conference rooms, military command centers, research laboratories — without exception. They could "see" and "hear" everything, sensing surrounding electromagnetic waves, sound waves, and various physical signals. All this information was transmitted back to the Trisolaran world in real-time through quantum entanglement.
This meant that from the moment sophons reached Earth, human society became completely transparent to the Trisolaran civilization. All of humanity's secrets — military deployments, strategic planning, scientific progress, political decisions — were within the Trisolaran civilization's grasp. Humanity effectively became a "naked" civilization, with no privacy whatsoever before an omniscient adversary.
Sophons also possessed the ability to project images onto human retinas. They used this function to conduct precision psychological attacks on specific scientists — displaying countdown numbers in their field of vision, creating supernatural phenomena like cosmic flickering, driving targets toward mental breakdown. These attacks left no physical traces, and victims could not even prove to others that their experiences were not hallucinations.
The Only Vulnerability
However, the sophons' surveillance capability contained one fundamental limitation: they could not read human thoughts. Sophons could monitor every word humans spoke and see every character they wrote, but could not peer into thoughts in the human brain that had not yet been externalized. This vulnerability later became the theoretical foundation of the Wallfacer Project — if a person contemplated strategy only within their brain, without expressing it through any external means, then even with sophons omnipresent, the strategy's contents could not be known.
The Wallfacer Project was built precisely on exploiting this single weakness of the sophons. Four Wallfacers were granted virtually unlimited authority, able to make any seemingly absurd decisions without explaining their true intentions to anyone. Because the moment their true plans were spoken aloud or written down, sophons would immediately transmit them back to the Trisolaran world. The Wallfacers had to lock their entire strategies within their own brains, advancing their plans through internal thought alone — this was humanity's only strategic space under the sophons' comprehensive surveillance.
The sophons' arrival profoundly altered how human civilization operated. From personal privacy to state secrets, from scientific research to military strategy, every corner of human society was exposed to an alien civilization's gaze. This comprehensive transparency brought profound psychological pressure and existential anxiety, while also driving humanity to develop unprecedented modes of strategic thinking. Though small as protons, sophons were the first — and most effective — weapon the Trisolaran civilization deployed against Earth.
