Event Description
The Three-Body story reaches its conclusion in a scene that is simultaneously grand and intimate. After Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan escaped the two-dimensionalizing solar system aboard a lightspeed ship, they traveled through the cosmos for an immense span of time before finally arriving at a pocket universe that Yun Tianming had created for Cheng Xin. This pocket universe was a perfect space independent of the main universe — with blue skies, white clouds, fields, and a small cottage, like an eternal Eden.
Within the pocket universe, Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan spent a period of tranquility. But when the Return Movement's message penetrated the dimensional barrier into their pocket universe, they learned of the crisis facing the main universe — if all civilizations retained their mass in pocket universes, the main universe would be unable to complete its cycle of rebirth. Every gram of mass retained in every pocket universe weakened the possibility of the main universe's regeneration.
Cheng Xin made her final major decision in the entire story — and perhaps her most correct one. She chose to return nearly all matter from the pocket universe to the main universe, keeping only a small ecological sphere containing a miniature ecosystem and a message carved in stone. This ecological sphere floated in the near-void of the emptied space, becoming the last trace that human civilization — indeed, all civilizations that had existed in this universe — had ever been.
Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan stepped out of the pocket universe and into the unknown fate of the main cosmos. The story ends here, leaving an open conclusion: would the main universe collect enough mass to complete its rebirth? What would the new universe look like? Would the small ecological sphere and its stone-carved message survive the universe's rebirth? These questions remain unanswered, but Cheng Xin's choice is itself the answer — at the end of the universe, kindness ultimately made the right choice.
