Earth-Trisolaris Organization

A clandestine organization founded (or indirectly enabled) by Ye Wenjie, dedicated to assisting the Trisolaran civilization's invasion of Earth. It contains three factions: the Adventists led by Evans, who seek humanity's total annihilation; the Redemptionists, who hope Trisolaran civilization will reform human society; and the Survivalists, who aim to secure survival privileges for themselves after the invasion.

Concept Definition

The Earth-Trisolaris Organization (ETO) is the central antagonistic force in the first volume of the Three-Body trilogy. It is an underground organization composed of human members who, for various reasons, chose to betray human civilization and assist the Trisolaran civilization — located four light-years away — in invading Earth.

Origins

Ye Wenjie's Choice

The birth of the ETO is inseparable from Ye Wenjie. During her time working at the Red Coast Base, Ye Wenjie used the Sun as a signal amplifier to broadcast a message into the cosmos and received a reply from the Trisolaran civilization. The reply warned her not to transmit again, or Earth would be located. But Ye Wenjie — having witnessed her father's murder during the Cultural Revolution and endured persecution herself — had lost all faith in human civilization. She chose to transmit again, inviting the Trisolaran civilization to come to Earth.

Evans's Role

Mike Evans was a wealthy American and environmentalist. Deeply disgusted by humanity's destruction of the natural world, he believed humans did not deserve to exist. Upon learning of the Trisolaran civilization, Evans used his vast wealth to establish the operational framework of the ETO, including the giant communications vessel Judgment Day, which maintained contact with the Trisolarans.

Three Factions

The Adventists

Led by Evans, the Adventists are the most extreme faction within the ETO. They believe human civilization is beyond redemption and that the Trisolaran civilization should completely annihilate humanity, allowing Earth to start anew. The Adventists' core belief is species cleansing — replacing the corrupt human civilization with a superior one.

The Redemptionists

The Redemptionists harbor an almost religious worship of the Trisolaran civilization. They believe the Trisolarans are far more advanced and noble than humans, and hope that upon arriving on Earth, the Trisolarans will help transform and elevate human society. Redemptionist members view the Trisolaran civilization as a "savior," trusting that an external force can resolve humanity's myriad problems.

The Survivalists

The Survivalists are the most pragmatic group. They neither desire humanity's extinction like the Adventists nor worship the Trisolaran civilization like the Redemptionists. Their goal is pure self-preservation — trading their assistance in the Trisolaran invasion for survival rights and privileged status in the new order.

Organization Activities

The "Three-Body" Game

The ETO uses a virtual reality game called "Three-Body" to screen and recruit new members. Players experience the harsh environment and civilizational development of the Trisolaran world; those who develop resonance with and admiration for the Trisolaran civilization are contacted and absorbed into the organization.

Supporting the Scientific Blockade

The ETO actively assists the Sophon's blockade of Earth science. They sow chaos within the scientific community, accelerating the collapse of the "Frontiers of Science," driving multiple physicists to despair and even suicide.

Judgment Day

Evans's giant communications vessel Judgment Day is the key facility for ETO-Trisolaran communication. The ship stores copies of all communication records between the ETO and the Trisolaran civilization. Ultimately, Judgment Day is destroyed by human military forces through "Operation Guzheng" — sliced apart with nanowire — and the communication records are captured.

Analysis from the Original Text

The ETO is Liu Cixin's profound reflection on the fractures within human civilization. When facing the threat of an alien invasion, humanity does not unite — instead, a considerable number of people choose betrayal. The motivations for this betrayal are diverse: some act from despair, some from idealism, and others from selfishness.

The three-faction structure is particularly masterful. The Adventists represent total negation of human civilization; the Redemptionists embody a naive utopian fantasy; the Survivalists expose the most naked egoism in human nature. All three attitudes find real-world parallels in how people respond to major crises.

Ye Wenjie's character is especially complex. She is not simply a "traitor" but a tragic figure deeply wounded by her own experiences, who lost faith in human civilization. Though her choice objectively led to catastrophic consequences, her motivations contain a desperate pursuit of justice and goodness.

Science Background

The Possibility of Interstellar Communication

The ETO's method of using the Sun to amplify signals for communication with the Trisolaran civilization has some scientific basis. The solar gravitational lens effect is indeed a theoretically viable mechanism for amplifying interstellar communication.

Nanotechnology

The nanowire cutting technology used in Operation Guzheng relates to real-world nanotechnology research. Carbon nanotubes and similar nanomaterials do indeed possess extremely high strength-to-weight ratios.
