DX3906 Star System

DX3906 is the star system that Yun Tianming gifted to Cheng Xin, containing the planets Blue Star and Gray Star. This distant star system becomes the setting for the trilogy's epilogue — where Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan discover the entrance to Pocket Universe 647, witness the eve of universal reset, and make the final choice to return their mass to the grand universe.

System Overview

DX3906 is a star located on the fringes of the Milky Way, approximately 286.5 light-years from the Solar System. The star hosts two planets: Blue Star and Gray Star. Within the vast narrative of the Three-Body series, this seemingly unremarkable star system carries the trilogy's most tender gift and its ultimate conclusion.

This star system entered human awareness through a story that is both romantic and tragic: after gaining the trust of the Trisolaran world, Yun Tianming used his influence to "purchase" this star and gave it as a gift to Cheng Xin. A star — the most extravagant love letter in the universe, and the most distant gift in human history.

Blue Star and Gray Star

Blue Star

Blue Star is the planet closer to the star in the DX3906 system, appearing blue due to atmospheric scattering effects. Blue Star possesses conditions suitable for life — appropriate temperature, liquid water, and a breathable atmosphere. When Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan finally arrive at DX3906, they land on Blue Star and discover a primitive but beautiful natural environment.

Blue Star's environment evokes Earth's ancient past — clear oceans, primordial vegetation, pristine skies. After an interminable interstellar journey, Blue Star feels like the universe's final gift to humanity before the end: a world where one can live in quiet peace.

Gray Star

Gray Star is the more distant planet in the system, with relatively harsh surface conditions and a desolate gray appearance. While Gray Star does not carry the same narrative significance as Blue Star, its presence completes the picture of this star system.

Yun Tianming's Gift

Yun Tianming's gift of the DX3906 star system to Cheng Xin is one of the most moving episodes in the Three-Body trilogy. The context of this gift traces back to the Deterrence Era:

Yun Tianming's brain was launched toward the Trisolaran fleet, and after an immense journey, he received a new body in the Trisolaran world. As a rare figure existing between humanity and Trisolaran civilization, Yun Tianming gradually earned a degree of status and trust in Trisolaran society. Using this unique position, he acquired "ownership" of the DX3906 star through some mechanism within the Trisolaran system (where stars can be "owned") and gifted it to Cheng Xin.

This gift traversed hundreds of light-years and several centuries. When Cheng Xin received the news, she was deeply moved — amid the darkness and cruelty of the universe, this star represented a pure emotion transcending the boundaries of civilization and species. Through his actions, Yun Tianming proved that even in exile among an alien civilization, his feelings for Cheng Xin had never changed.

On a deeper narrative level, this gift also functions as foreshadowing. DX3906 becomes Cheng Xin's ultimate destination — after enduring the collapse of deterrence, dimensional strikes, and lightspeed flight, she finally arrives at the planet Yun Tianming prepared for her. The gift spans the entire trilogy's timeline, fulfilling its purpose in the final chapter.

Pocket Universe 647

After arriving on Blue Star, Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan make a stunning discovery — the entrance to Pocket Universe 647.

A Pocket Universe is a miniature independent universe created by advanced civilizations, possessing its own independent physical laws and time flow rate. Pocket Universe 647 was created by Yun Tianming (likely with the aid of Trisolaran technology) as a final refuge for Cheng Xin. Upon entering, Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan find a carefully designed small world — with pastoral landscapes, a house, and everything needed to sustain life.

The time flow rate inside the pocket universe differs from the grand universe. Time spent inside the pocket universe may correspond to millions or even billions of years in the grand universe. This makes pocket universes a unique form of "time travel" — not returning to the past, but skipping across the future.

Universal Reset and the Final Choice

After living in Pocket Universe 647 for a period, Cheng Xin and Guan Yifan receive a message from the grand universe: the universe is approaching its reset.

The "reset" refers to the universe transitioning from expansion to contraction, ultimately collapsing back into a singularity. But this reset has a prerequisite — the grand universe's total mass must reach a critical value. The problem is that pocket universes created by countless civilizations have "stolen" vast amounts of mass from the grand universe. If this mass is not returned, the grand universe may never complete its reset and rebirth — it would drift toward a cold death of eternal expansion.

An appeal from the "Return Movement" calls upon all inhabitants of pocket universes to return their mass. This is a moral choice: keeping one's pocket universe means safety and comfort, but also means permanently stealing mass from the grand universe, potentially preventing its rebirth.

Cheng Xin ultimately chooses to return Pocket Universe 647's mass to the grand universe, keeping only a small ecological sphere as a gift and memory for the new universe. This choice embodies Cheng Xin's core character: when faced with self-preservation versus the greater good, she always chooses the latter. It is also one of the trilogy's ultimate themes — the moral choices of individuals on a cosmic scale.

The Epilogue Stage

As the setting for the Three-Body trilogy's epilogue, the DX3906 star system carries multiple layers of symbolism. It is the ultimate destination of a love letter that traversed space and time, the place where humanity (or rather, humanity's last representatives) confronts the universe's ultimate fate, and the final convergence point where intimate human emotion meets cosmic destiny.

From Ye Wenjie's first signal transmitted from Red Coast Base to Cheng Xin's final choice on DX3906's Blue Star, the Three-Body trilogy completes a full narrative arc: humanity evolves from a small existence gazing up at the stars to a species forced to participate in cosmic-scale games, ultimately making a final choice about existence itself on the edge of universal reset.
