Why do scientists kill themselves at the start of The Three-Body Problem?
They kill themselves because they discover that physics itself has stopped working — and for a theoretical physicist, that is worse than death. The novel opens not with aliens but with a wave of unexplained suicides among elite physicists. The young theoretician Yang Dong leaves a note saying physics has never existed and never will. To an outsider this sounds insane. To a physicist it is the most terrifying sentence imaginable.
The setup is deliberate. A researcher who hits a dead end can change fields. But Yang Dong and the others were not facing a hard problem. They were facing the conclusion that the problem had no answer, and never had one. That is not a career crisis. It is the collapse of the ground they stood on their whole lives.
What actually broke in the experiments?
Particle accelerators around the world began returning inconsistent results. The same experiment, run at the same energy with the same collisions, produced different numbers each time, with no reproducible pattern. For a layperson that reads as "the data got noisy." Modern science rests on one non-negotiable assumption: the laws of physics are the same everywhere and at every time. That is why an apple falling and a planet orbiting obey the same law of gravity. If accelerators prove that the rules of the microscopic world change at random and cannot be reproduced, then there is no unified, knowable order underneath reality at all. For someone who bet their life on finding the ultimate laws of the universe, that is not bad news. It is the erasure of the meaning of their entire body of work. The eerie countdown Wang Miao saw in his nanomaterial photographs delivered the same blow at a personal scale — a string of numbers invading the physical reality he trusted.
Who or what caused it?
The suicides are not supernatural. The cause is the sophons sent by the Trisolarans — protons unfolded into lower dimensions, etched with circuitry, given intelligence, and sent to Earth at near light speed. A sophon does something restrained but lethal: it does not destroy the accelerators, it slips inside them and corrupts the outcome at the critical instant of collision, so humanity's high-energy experiments never yield trustworthy data.
This is the Trisolarans' opening move. Their fleet needs more than four centuries to arrive, and human technology advances exponentially — four centuries is enough for humans to overtake them. They cannot stop humans from building ships and weapons, but they can freeze human fundamental physics. If people can never see deeper into the structure of matter, theoretical physics stalls, and every breakthrough that depends on new physics becomes impossible. Cut the accelerators and you cut the taproot of the entire tech tree. Note that a sophon's powers have hard limits — it cannot conjure matter or break the speed of light — but it is enough to halt a species' science.
What was the flickering universe?
If the accelerator sabotage destroyed the physics community, the flickering of the universe destroyed one man's private sanity. To force Wang Miao to cooperate, the sophons made the entire cosmic microwave background blink on and off in his eyes, on a schedule he had been told in advance. The whole sky, flickering, as if someone were flipping a switch. It was a miracle staged at an absurd scale for an audience of one, and its message was simple: even the universe can be toyed with, and everything you trust is inside someone else's control.
Read together, Yang Dong's suicide, Wang Miao's countdown, and the flickering sky are three faces of the same psychological war. What the Trisolarans really wanted to break was not human laboratories but the human belief that the world is understandable. Strip a civilization of its confidence in cause and effect, and its best scientific minds either go mad or die in despair. This was the first price humanity paid after Ye Wenjie invited Trisolaris toward Earth.
Why Yang Dong first?
Of all the scientists who died, Yang Dong's death carries the most weight. She was Ye Wenjie's daughter, a theoretician of near-total purity who treated physics as faith rather than a job. That purity left her no exit when the faith collapsed. Someone who treats physics as a living can change careers; someone for whom it is the entire meaning of life has nowhere to go.
Liu Cixin uses her death to set the tone of the whole trilogy. The Trisolaran crisis does not begin with ships and weapons. It begins with the sentence "physics does not exist." The first territory invaded is human cognition itself. Once you see that, the seemingly senseless suicides in the opening pages become what they really are — the coldest and cruelest opening move in the entire series.
