What about the woman in the kimono — isn't that a sophon?
That is a different thing that happens to share the name. In the third book, the Trisolarans build a humanoid robot avatar out of nanomaterials, also called Sophon — an elegant kimono-clad figure who performs tea ceremonies and can switch instantly into a killing machine. She is Trisolaris's envoy and surveillance terminal on Earth.
But the humanoid Sophon avatar is a macroscopic robot shell, while the original sophons are the proton-sized quantum computers doing the actual science lockdown. They are not the same entity. Trisolaris only ever built and launched two proton-sized sophons toward Earth, and that small number is itself part of the design's elegance.
Why did Liu Cixin make the ultimate weapon formless?
Because refusing to give the threat a shape is the whole trick. Traditional science fiction gives its alien menace a vast fleet or a monstrous body so you can fear it directly. Liu Cixin does the opposite: the thing that truly locks down a civilization is too small to see, everywhere at once, and already here.
