Why Will Downing is not a Season 2 lead
Because Season 2 adapts The Dark Forest, and that novel belongs to Luo Ji and the Wallfacer Project -- the arc mapped onto Saul Durand's Wallfacer storyline. The Dark Forest era is about cosmic sociology, the Wallfacer Project, and the final act of deterrence. None of that runs through Will's brain.
The chapters where Yun Tianming truly returns -- the fairy tales, the decoding, the deep-space intelligence -- are third-book material. So if Netflix keeps the source's pacing, Will most likely appears in Season 2 in one of a few limited ways:
