Is Three-Body Problem based on a true story?
No. There was no real Trisolaran civilization, no sophons sent to lock down Earth's science, and the dark forest is not an accepted astronomical theory. Three-Body Problem is a science fiction novel written by Liu Cixin, serialized in 2006 and later awarded the Hugo Award. Neither the Netflix nor the Tencent series is based on real events.
That said, "not a true story" is not the same as "made up out of nothing." The reason the show leaves so many viewers with the uneasy feeling that this could actually happen is that it builds its fiction on top of one very real layer of science and history. Is the three-body problem itself real?
Yes, and this is the part most people are surprised to learn. Is the Cultural Revolution part real?
Yes. The story opens with Ye Wenjie's father being beaten to death during the Cultural Revolution — a fictional character inside a real historical period. The Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) happened, and the persecution of intellectuals depicted in that opening is not invented. It is also the key to understanding why Ye Wenjie sent the signal that invited an alien civilization to Earth.
Is Red Coast Base real? Did people really listen for aliens?
The Red Coast base is fictional, but its premise is not. Actively broadcasting signals into space and listening for a reply is real science: SETI has been doing versions of this since the 1960s, and in 1974 humanity really did beam a greeting from the Arecibo telescope toward a star cluster. The technology behind the Red Coast signal is essentially real radio astronomy scaled up one notch.
So what parts are pure fiction?
The Trisolarans, the sophons, the droplet, and the two-dimensional foil are all Liu Cixin's invention with no real-world counterpart. The one most often mistaken for a "real theory" is the dark forest — the idea that the universe is a dark forest where every civilization is an armed hunter. It sounds like a serious astrobiology hypothesis, but it is a worldview internal to the novel, not a scientific consensus.
