Yes. Jess Hong's Jin Cheng is the closest thing the Netflix series has to a single central protagonist, and the renewal for Seasons 2 and 3 was built around the core "Oxford Five" ensemble that she anchors. A Season 2 without Jin Cheng barely holds together.
The real question is not whether she returns but what she does once the story enters the Dark Forest era. Season 2 adapts The Dark Forest, and the lead of that novel is Luo Ji, who maps onto Saul Durand's Wallfacer storyline. So the question fans really have is whether Jin Cheng gets sidelined by Saul.
Which book characters does Jin Cheng correspond to?
She is a composite. Netflix compressed several characters, spread across three novels and two centuries in the original, into one recurring lead:
- In Season 1 she largely plays the role of Wang Miao, the scientist dragged into the mystery through the VR game and nanomaterial research.
- More importantly, she carries the arc of Cheng Xin from the third book. Driving the Staircase Program, sending away the brain of the man who loves her, and accepting the star he buys her are lifted directly from Cheng Xin and Yun Tianming's story, with Will Downing standing in for Yun Tianming.
In other words, the show imported a third-book relationship into Season 1, which is why Jin Cheng already carries one of the heaviest emotional threads in the whole saga.
Will Jin Cheng be replaced by Saul Durand in Season 2?
Probably not replaced -- paralleled. The Wallfacer plot belongs to Saul, since he corresponds to Luo Ji. Jin Cheng is unlikely to take over the Wallfacer Project itself.
But she holds a thread Saul does not: Will Downing's brain. In the novel, Yun Tianming's intercepted mind becomes the single most important secret channel between humanity and the enemy, hiding escape plans and high-dimensional physics inside three fairy tales. As the only person who loves Will and can read him, Jin Cheng is the natural carrier of the what happens after the brain is intercepted storyline. The most likely structure is two parallel leads: Saul carries the cold strategy of dark forest deterrence, and Jin Cheng carries the emotional and deep-space thread.
Why does the adaptation load so much onto Jin Cheng?
Because moving the story from its Chinese setting to the globalized Oxford Five meant the show could not keep the novels' habit of swapping protagonists every book. A television audience needs a fixed set of faces to follow across seasons.
Jin Cheng became that anchor. She is the Season 1 science-detective and the early bearer of the third book's emotional core at the same time. The cost is that she carries more dramatic weight than any single character in the source, forcing Season 2 to balance Saul's strategic storyline against her far warmer one. If Netflix wants Jin Cheng to reach both the Dark Forest era and the later Swordholder era that also belongs to Cheng Xin, hibernation is almost the only narrative tool available.
One caveat worth stating plainly: Season 2 has not aired yet.
